Genetic Testing
GeneSight® is a genetic test designed to help healthcare providers make more informed decisions about prescribing medications for mental health conditions. It analyzes a patient's genetic makeup to determine how their genes may affect their response to certain psychiatric medications.

GeneSight®
Here's how GeneSight® generally works:
-
Genetic Analysis: A DNA sample (usually obtained through a cheek swab) is analyzed to identify genetic variations that may impact how a person metabolizes certain medications.
-
Medication Matching: Based on the genetic analysis, GeneSight categorizes medications into different groups:
- Green: Medications that are likely to be more effective based on the patient's genetic profile.
- Yellow: Medications that may have some considerations based on the genetic profile.
- Red: Medications that may have a higher risk of not being effective or causing adverse effects based on the genetic profile.
-
Clinical Guidance: The test results provide guidance to healthcare providers about which medications may be more appropriate or less appropriate for the patient, helping to personalize treatment decisions.
GeneSight® is primarily used in the field of psychiatry to assist in the treatment of conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health disorders where medication management is a critical component of care. It aims to improve patient outcomes by reducing the trial-and-error approach often associated with finding the right medication and dosage for an individual.
